Crops for a Cause: Color Your Farm with Rainbow Chard
FarmVille fans add some color to their farm while benefitting the Edible Schoolyard Project, when they purchase new, limited edition rainbow chard.
Starting today, play FarmVille and purchase permits to grow limited-edition rainbow chard, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Edible Schoolyard Project – a national organization that supports “edible education” throughout the United States. And crop champions aren’t just sprucing up their farm with these brilliantly-colored chard, farmers receive a highly-prized limited-edition garden gnome, and once the crop is mastered – a limited-edition virtual lunchbox, full of fresh produce.
This partnership is in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley, California – founded by renowned chef Alice Waters – a pioneer on the American food landscape. By providing students with interactive food experiences such as planting, growing and harvesting (much of which FarmVille fans experience on a daily basis!) – the Edible Schoolyard Project aims to change the way students eat and think about food. The organization supports the Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley – a model one-acre garden and kitchen classroom for urban public school students and shares best practices with programs throughout the country.
Like with the Edible Schoolyard Project, through Zynga’s philanthropic initiative Zynga.org, players (along with a donation from Lady Gaga) banded together to raise more than $3 million to provide aid for victims of the Japan earthquake in March 2011, as well as raising more than $4 million for various initiatives in Haiti, including providing school lunches for children through FATEM, giving microloans to Haitian women through Fonkoze.org and the building of a K-12 school.
Play here today to give back!
